Common mistakes when designing

Creating an invitation is often quick. Still, a few small issues can make the design feel cluttered or reduce readability. Fortunately, these mistakes are easy to avoid.

Before sharing your invitation, take a moment to review it once more.

If you are unsure about your design, look at your invitation again with fresh eyes. Small adjustments in heading length, text size, or spacing can already make a big difference.

Text that is too small

A common mistake is text that is too small. On a large screen it may still seem readable, but on a phone small text can quickly become difficult to read.

Always check whether the most important information — such as date, time, and location — remains clearly readable on mobile.

Too little contrast

Text should have enough contrast with the background or card color. When colors are too similar, the text becomes harder to read.

For longer texts, dark text on a light card or light text on a dark card usually works best.

Too many different styles

An invitation often looks calmer when the number of styles is limited. Too many different fonts, colors, or text sizes can make the design feel messy.

It usually works best to use one style for headings and one style for the rest of the text.

Headings that are too long

Headings work best when they are short and clear. Long headings take up more space and can easily wrap across multiple lines on mobile.

Try to keep headings as compact as possible.

Images that do not fit well

Sometimes a photo does not fit well within the layout, which can cause an important part of the image to be cropped.

In that case it often helps to:

  • choose another photo
  • crop the image differently
  • choose a layout that better fits the photo

Too little spacing

When elements are placed too close together, an invitation can feel crowded. A bit of spacing helps create a calmer and clearer design.

It often works well to use one or two consistent spacing distances instead of many different gaps.

Not checking on mobile

Many invitations are viewed on a phone. Always check how your design looks on a mobile screen before sending the invitation.
